Ready, Set, Dinner!

by Krestie Tolstedt

October 30, 2006

Eighth graders in Mrs. Tolstedt's Advanced Family and Consumer Science class recently completed a module entitled, "Dinner Time". The module addressed issues families deal with when planning menus on a daily basis.

Students studied nutrition and what needed to go into a menu to provided balanced meals for everyone in the family. Students looked at making menus and how colors, textures and flavors can make a meal more appetizing.

One of their favorite activities was watching the food Network program, Quick Cooking. Students watched noticing what the cook did to insure food sanitation and safety, to plan variety in menus and to dovetail tasks to save time and energy.

The students also enjoyed preparing a variety of foods. One classroom favorite was macaroni and cheese pizza made by dovetailing macaroni and cheese from an earlier lab. The students made menu plans for their families for one week. They planned lunch and dinner menus so that one-half of the plate was fruits and vegetables, one-fourth was protein and one-fourth was breads and cereals.

To make other students aware of what should be eaten the students decorated paper plates with the foods on their menus and created a bulletin board to promote good eating.
