Recently 6th grade Social Studies teacher Mrs. Cody and 6th grade Science teacher Mrs. Hanson traded classrooms and subjects for a day. Mrs. Cody spent Thursday, March 16, in the Science classroom preparing the students for a visit from Master Sergeant Brian Moomey who spoke to the students the following day about his recent 3-week trip to Antarctica. Mrs. Cody had the students watch the movie "March of the Penguins" to learn how the penguins survive the extreme conditions of Antarctica.
Mrs. Hanson presented a program about Peru during the Social Studies classes. She talked about the diverse geography of Peru and the diverse cultures and lifestyles of the country's people. A few years ago, she spent a month in Peru with her daughter traveling around the country.
The following day, Friday, March 17, Master Sergeant Brian Moomey of the Wyoming Air National Guard spoke to the students about Antarctica. He presented slides showing McMurdo Station, the base of many scientists conducting various types of research throughout Antarctica. Some of the interesting features of his presentation were the history of exploration of Antarctica, including the actual, naturally preserved hut and its contents of the explorer Robert Falcon Scott, and pictures of Moomey at the ceremonial and geographic South Pole.
Master Sargent Moomey was in Antarctica as part of a team sent to supply maintenance on the C130 airplanes used to fly people and cargo to and around Antarctica. He is a 1991 graduate of Alliance High School, a veteran of the Air Force and a 14-year member of the Wyoming Air National Guard.
